Characterization is the way the author introduces and develops a character throughout the story. It helps the reader get familiarized with the character that is being described. It happens in stages; first the character is introduction. Introduction is where appearance and background is shown. The next stage is the character's thoughts and development. The third stage is the character's interaction with other characters. An example of characterization is when Eliza is introduced to Higgins's mother after she is being trained to be speak 'proper' by Higgins. She reveals her background when she breaks character of a high society lady and tells the group how her Aunt was 'done in' and that her father is a raging alcoholic.
