Sarcasm is the use of irony as humor. What is said that is considered to be sarcasm isn't always the truth, rather an exaggeration. It can also be taken as harsh or offensive. Higgins heavily uses sarcasm throughout the novel, especially in regards to Eliza. He gets a sense of amusement out of his taunts and blatant sarcasm, and his use of it is seen as incredibly rude by London Society's standards. A perfect example of Higgins's sarcasm is when he says to Eliza, "Shall we ask this baggage to sit down, or shall we throw her out the window?" This does not mean that Higgins actually wants to throw Eliza out of a window.
